The anatomy of a board – Scrabble

Client wanted a bit of a different approach. The board would not be on a box, but rather in one, to be removed for play. Accessories stored under the board.

Here is the outside of the case, closed. It's is about 2" high and the handle is split and attached to each half.

This standard size scrabble board was made in cherry with Peruvian walnut accent stripes and a custom handle on the drawer.
The client requested an inlaid label in contrasting material with the name and logo engraved on it. Since the board was caramelized bamboo, we made the label with natural bamboo.
This custom scrabble board was fun; made in cherry with cambia (cooked) maple accent stripes - around the base and in the 4 corners of the board itself.
This mahogany scrabble board has a wide inlaid stripe around the base made with maple, and a custom pentagonal handle.
Here is a slightly different treatment with the wide band around the base in maple; we carved a concave groove the width of the inlaid strip, creating an interesting contour effect.
Here is a close look at the border of one of the caramelized scrabble boards. This one has a clean squared off edge around the board.
This was a fun project. The client has a beach house and wanted a large scrabble board made out of distressed material, preferably something that had been laying around in the sand for a few years. Most of the distressed materials we found didn't have sufficient structural integrity, so we learned how to "age" oak or walnut (high in tannins) to create the effect. This one was originally red oak.
Here is a view of the oak board that was distressed by aging the material used for the border and base; also note the fences were made of the same distressed material.
